What Students Are Saying…

“My experiences in the trombone studio at Southern Miss have been nothing short of fantastic. We all support and push each other to be the best musicians we can be.”

— Nicholas Dauerer, BM major

“Since I joined the trombone studio at Southern Miss, I’ve known it to be more than just a group of students with similar passions- we’re a family, a community. The caliber of this studio is unmatched, and it is a primary component of what has made my experience at Southern Miss so enjoyable.”

— Jessica Coates, BME major

“The trombone studio at Southern Miss has been an excellent place for me the past two years. There are so many opportunities for musical growth and creative expression. There is a sense of belonging in that every studio member wants to see you succeed.”

— Caleb Owenby, MM (2021), currently pursuing a DMA

About the Studio

What is the studio like?

A large and active group, the Southern Miss trombone studio includes music majors pursuing undergraduate degrees in music education, jazz studies, performance, BA; master's degrees in performance and music education; and doctoral degrees in performance and music education. In addition to a weekly lesson, each studio member attends a weekly studio class, trombone octet, and choir rehearsals. Many members of the studio perform in trombone quartets and join our jazz trombone ensemble, Hub Bones.

Faculty

Every component including recruitment, mentorship, musicianship, camaraderie, ownership, and being strong ambassadors for the trombone studio, the School of Music, and the University, ultimately is my responsibility as the applied trombone professor. My desire as a teacher is to work myself out of a job by encouraging my students to become their own best teachers. With this in mind, I focus on a methodical and goal-oriented approach with each student. This includes not only developing short and long-term goals with the student, but also helping to provide the tools for success as they strive for improvement in the practice room and the real world. All of these methodologies and approaches are under the umbrella of creating a safe, yet challenging, environment in the trombone studio that motivates and champions each student to become better from year to year, while welcoming new students and celebrating our alumni.
